419 Baits

A collaborative scambaiting blog

Straightbaiting

I'm paring down my baits to a manageable number. Several of my characters now have auto-responses stating they are travelling across the world or otherwise extremely busy. This has already caused some lads much frustration. A few lads are waiting for me to correct WU payment details I sent on Monday, one claims he is stuck in the Miami airport waiting for me to rescue him, and several have not heard from me since Mr. Smith George got in touch with me. One lad has called and emailed at least five times today screaming that he needs to get in touch with me.

I'm putting most of my attention now on a handful of minimalistic straightbaits with a new character. My goal is to use no technical modalities at all. No phone calls made or received, not a single document handed over. The average time between a letter and response will be over one day. I will delay them as long as possible using only my ability to lie. Only after I've managed this for a few months, will I start using GV and other modalities again.

Since this is straightbaiting at its purest, I think I will forego real-time updates via forwarding. I'll try to collate the threads once a week and then post them with notes on my tactics.

Straightbaiting is the essence of scambaiting, but it is a prolonged amusement. A good straightbait should be extremely fun in entirety, even though any specific part is not as fun as, say, demanding a video of lads reenacting a Seinfeld episode. Think the Pickwick Papers versus a Carlin routine.

On the 419eater forums, there is a philosophy that derides newbies who ask everyone for technical help. "You want me to help you mock up a receipt? Why are you giving him a receipt? Why are you doing what the lad is telling you to do? Who is in control here?"

This makes sense. Every time you comply with the scammer, you should be a mite ashamed. Think of what total compliance would mean: actually sending money out. This is a spectrum, not a binary thing. Each time you carry out his will, you are moving that much closer to being a victim rather than a conniving evil genius. Each blurry scan is a sign that you didn't put up enough of a struggle. Of course, some compromise is going to happen. He may be making every sign of dropping you unless he gets the Magic Document. Think long and hard, though, if sending this document is actually necessary.

I now think that the only good time to use some technical trick is when you are certain that he will not do your wishes without it. If your goal is to waste his time and get lots of laughs, then waste his time. If your goal is to get him to tattoo "I suck dick" on himself, etc, then you may have to use artificial means to increase his greed and commitment to your character.

Basically, these technical tricks ought to be the last resort in a straightbait, or an essential element of the plot in a trophy bait.

The reason for Dplo Mat's distress

That Smith George. He really gets around!

From: me

I went out and wired the money. I then just called the number you gave
me. I'm confused.

A Mr. Smith George answered the phone. He told me I had the wrong
information, told me I had to cancel the order and put in the correct
information. He said you were his employee and that you had not gotten
the information correctly. The information he wants is:

receiver: Christopher Idiagowala
City: Accra
Country: Ghana
question: How many
answer: so many
Amount: $550

I told him I would have to talk to you first and he got angry at me.

What's going on? What is this I don't even.

Please be a good partner to me.

My batchbaiting script still has rough edges. This lad found one: he never did give me the refugee camp's almost obligatory good Reverend's phone number.

He gets a slap for this.

I was calling +22566935270  thinking that he could get in touch with you outside of our transaction because he is a friend of your father's and a good man.

I was calling him, hoping that he and I could throw some cash together and get you a GSM phone.

I was calling him because I love you.

And you suddenly act all paranoid like a cunt with its head cut off.

It's always this way with princesses. Why do I bother?

I was going to wire you the funds to get a GSM phone, food, etc, to hold you over til we can get you free. Now, why should I? You'll just act like a fucking cunt.

Oh, don't worry about it. Your clerk already called to say he received the money. Any minute now he'll walk into your office with the news.

P.S. Make sure you give that guy a raise. Mr. Smith George is extremely friendly and competent. Could you ask him to contact me over email? I'll be travelling to Nigeria in a few weeks on business and I would love to spend some time with his family. His wife sounds like queen of a woman, and his baby son sounds very cute.

I'm talking to Smith George on the phone right now. He sounds angry. He insists that I ignore you.

What email correspondence? I called the number you gave me and he answered. Then he called me back just now and we're discussing the money order.

Should I hang up? He's asking for my passport and other ID too.

You will need to call me now, this is another way of confirming whom you really are and we will get to know ourselves well.

Waiting here please

Thank you.

Sorry, I think the scan didn't go through properly. Here is the attached documentation. I also added, for your convenience, several front-and-back scans of a few blank checks in each of the five accounts whose details are also in the scan.

help the sos children

And I respond to Padmore with an offer he really shouldn't refuse. Note that Pedro Lopez and Albert Fish are rather famous for being very unfriendly towards orphans.

How nice. I just checked my inbox before getting back on the road, and found your message.

As I have already said, my organization will pay any and all costs associated with gathering, transporting, documenting, and caring for the orphans. We will pay for every appearance of legality. You will in no way be associated with anything untoward. Trust me, we can bankroll whatever difficulties that come up with legal fees and other red tape.

I will call you sometime around noon, when I should have arrived at Albert Fish's Bed and Breakfast in Nantucket. I don't know what you hope to get from a phone call, but at the least I ought to be able to ease your worries that you will be somehow implicated in a distasteful public scandal.

My friend, all we require is that you continue to care for these orphans, continue to nourish and medicate them as best as you can, and, importantly, evaluate which of them are healthy and virginal. We cannot purchase them unless they satisfy our criteria, and they cannot satisfy our criteria unless you take excellent care of them.

Now I will need your word that you have not and will not contact anyone regarding this transaction. I know you fear your reputation being tarnished, but that may not stop you from telling your lawyer or wife. Please consider the importance of curing AIDS. If you were to let loose that you were somehow involved with us, I assure you that every suffering parent and every government of Africa would be at your doorstep instantly.

Also at noon at Albert Fish's Bed and Breakfast, I will contact my superior and ask him if I may give you his contact information. He, more than I, has the power to immediately transfer funds, approve or disapprove, and otherwise speed this transaction.

I hope this message reaches you in health, good cheer, vim, vigor, and excitement.
